2012 Vintage

Image description

This was our first vintage and the learning curve was steep throughout the growing season.  We spent the year living in 'interesting times' as 2012 will be noted as one of the most nail-biting to begin & then spectacular to conclude harvests on record.  Variable weather conditions plagued the beginning of harvest as a result of late spring snows.  However a good even flowering and a relatively cool but exceptionally long ‘Indian Summer’ allowed the critical hang-time and slow ripening of fruit on the vine to intensify flavors whilst acid levels remained intact producing wines with wonderful flavors at lower alcohols – 2012 Is definitely a vintage to watch.

Our second vintge started much the same as the first with a late and hard frost in November which delayed onset of bud burst and early season growth.  However good weather over flowering resulted in a quick but very good fruit set. It was the wonderfully dry and warm summer that followed and then extended into a glorious autumn that will characterize this season.  Warm days & cool nights, slowed the ripening of the fruit on the vine which intensifies flavours and ensures high natural acid levels remain intact.

2014 Vintage

Image description

The 2014 growing season started with less of a whimper than the previous two with a warm November and December followed by a cool January. With most of the region galloping to ripeness very early, we hit a lovely cool patch in early April which slowed down sugar accumulation and gave us long hang time on the vine to develop those lovely flavours. We think 2014 will be a great year for Wanaka wines.
