"The 2012 Pinot Noir is a light, even ruby-red colour, lighter edged with aromas of red cherry fruit and red florals in the cooler spectrum, showing some herbal notes. Light-medium bodied, tightly bound flavours of red cherry fruit and florals grow to show a concentrated core with good drive and energy. Elevated acidity adds to the firmness and tension. The palate carries through to a concentrated and lingering finish with cherry and raspberry notes. This light-weighted, fresh and lively Pinot Noir has concentration and firmly driven flavours of cherries and raspberries." Raymond Chan (16.5+/20)
“Medium-full bodied, rich citrus fruit flavours backed by creamy barrel-ferment notes form an elegantly proportioned palate. Complexing oak, mineral and flinty detail is in support, and the mouthfeel is refreshing and lively from bright, crisp acidity. This has cut and tension, and the flavours are carried to a long, lingering finish. This is an elegantly concentrated, fresh Chardonnay with subtle complexities and creaminess. “ Raymond Chan (18.5/20)
A lush vibrant nose with an abundance of fresh fruit & herb aromas – peach, nectarine, citrus blossom & dill. Warm & intriguing aromas of toasted brioche with shades of roasted nuts comes from barrel fermentation & maturation, meshing well with the opulent fruit aromas. A warm rich palate with luscious stone fruit flavours, good texture and a clean, crisp finish. A well balanced and elegant wine.
Beautiful aromatics of blackcurrant vine, dried cherry and crushed herb fill this wines intriguing scents. Purity of fruit flavours once again reign supreme on the palate. The wine unashamedly flaunts its abundance of fruit flavours, providing a sweet, fleshy wine with lovely herbal, savoury tannins.
This was our first vintage and the learning curve was steep throughout the growing season. We spent the year living in 'interesting times' as 2012 will be noted as one of the most nail-biting to begin & then spectacular to conclude harvests on record. Variable weather conditions plagued the beginning of harvest as a result of late spring snows. However a good even flowering and a relatively cool but exceptionally long ‘Indian Summer’ allowed the critical hang-time and slow ripening of fruit on the vine to intensify flavors whilst acid levels remained intact producing wines with wonderful flavors at lower alcohols – 2012 Is definitely a vintage to watch.
Our
second vintge started much the same as the first with a late and
hard frost in November which delayed onset of bud burst and early
season growth. However good weather over flowering resulted
in a quick but very good fruit set. It was the wonderfully dry and
warm summer that followed and then extended into a glorious autumn
that will characterize this season. Warm days & cool
nights, slowed the ripening of the fruit on the vine which
intensifies flavours and ensures high natural acid levels remain
intact.
The 2014 growing season started with less of a whimper than the
previous two with a warm November and December followed by a cool
January. With most of the region galloping to ripeness very early,
we hit a lovely cool patch in early April which slowed down sugar
accumulation and gave us long hang time on the vine to develop
those lovely flavours. We think 2014 will be a great year for
Wanaka wines.
